When Scented Products Are Usually a Mistake

If fragranced body products normally end in regret, this is the version worth a try. The bottle is the familiar twenty-ounce one, except shea and cocoa butter have been worked into the mineral oil base, and the label carries a hypoallergenic claim. Richer, more nourishing, and pointed at dry or easily irritated skin rather than at anyone shopping for a scent.

The butters thicken the pour, so the oil clings to a shoulder instead of running straight off it, and a modest amount travels further than you would guess. That extra body is what carries a stroke from the neck to the lower back without stopping to top up. Go slow; a heavier oil rewards patience more than speed.

Butters need more persuasion than plain oil, so reach for soap and give it a minute under hot water. Store it capped, somewhere cool. The usual oil rule holds — latex condoms are out of the question — and this is no stand-in for lubricant either, so keep a water-based bottle in the drawer for that job.
